Thu 14/12/06 - On Wednesday evening the Francophone public broadcaster RTBF interrupted its normal programmes with the news that Flanders had declared independence.

(see also this article ). While some people are amused, most were shocked, however Belgium is still one country.

Meanwhile Mira has gone through a series of difficult nights because her first tooth has finally declared independence. She's been playing with it with her tongue all day long!
She's also started 3 'meals' a day- kiwi, banana, apple, potato, carrot, zucchini... We try and give her bite sized pieces, instead of mashing it all, and she can drink water from a cup (slightly assisted of course).

diamonds kill in Antwerp

At a dawn raid on Thursday, December 7, the Antwerp police raided the house of Indian diamantaire Nikhil Manilal, who at the time was at home together with his wife Sujata and his father. When confronted with the police detectives he was struck by a heart attack and collapsed. Only when it was apparent that the 46-year old diamantaire had passed away, some ten to 15 minutes later, an ambulance was called.

The version of this news is quite different from the one on the Belgian news, stating that an ambulance was called within one minute of the attack.

The Indian diamond community is outraged and already spoke to the prime minister about the incident.

De Sint is langsgeweest en omdat Mira een half jaar braaf is geweest kreeg ze een lekker houten speelgoedje. Het is nu 11 uur vrijdagavond en ze ligt onvermoeibaar naast mij te spartelen, soms os ze echt niet in slaap te krijgen. Maar het goede nieuws is dat ze vandaag voor het eerst echt gegeten heeft met een lepeltje, ik bedoel dus dat wij haar het lepeltje in de mond staken en zij de appel ook echt opat. Het concept eten dringt tot haar door, want daarvoor was het enkel sabbelen op een lepel of kauwen op wat eten en niet de twee samen.

12 November 2006, wedding anniversary brunch

Time flies and so much has happened in these two years. We had some friends over for a brunch last Sunday to celebrate this. Here you can see Dorien and Lisa trying to feed Mira a giraffe and an apple at our brunch :) Sarah took a few nice pictures too.

Mira got her first shots yesterday- a Polio and Tetanus cocktail. She took it quite well, much better than the anxious mum :-)

After a few weeks without a phone nor internet (thanks to the liberlalised phone market in the EU) we are back online. Our daughter turned 5 months and started to roll over on both sides and can almost sit up straight. Going to the creche three days a week is a joy, apart from the colds she keeps getting there. Right now she is sitting next to me in a bumbo baby chair making lots of lionlike noises, roaring and squeeling. She is 6.8 kilos!

Amy came to visit from Australia, just like she did last year in September, when we had just found out Mira was on her way. This time she was here for a shoe fair in Paris and a holiday in Croatia. You can see her pictures here

This week Mira went to the creche for the first time. As of next week, she will go there every Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday. So far, its been good, even being fed by a bottle full of breast milk instead of drinking at the source!

Back to work..... soon

I've been at home since May, and will go back in a week. I am looking forward to it, though a bit wary about Mira's adjustment to the creche. I'll work 4 days a week, Jeroen's mum will babysit one day and she will go to the creche for3 days. We're doing a dry run next week!

We spent a day at the lake in the Lilse bergen with them, picknick, swim and sleep.

We had a lovely day cherry- picking in Limburg, an hour's drive from Antwerp, and came back with 8 kilos of cherries!

Mumbai is zijn trots en ,,good vibe'' nog lang niet kwijt

She lent me worth, and gave me right to pride . Ze verleende mij waardigheid, en gaf me het recht op mijn trots, zo becommentarieerde de Britse Nobelprijswinnaar literatuur Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) - de wereldberoemde schrijver van The Jungle Book - zijn geboortestad Bombay.

In Kiplings tijd stond India onder rechtstreeks gezag van de Britse kroon. Het gigantische land zou in 1947 zijn onafhankelijkheid afdwingen. In 1997 voerde het hindoe-bestuur in de deelstaat Maharashtra de naamsverandering van Bombay in Mumbai door. Bombay, nochtans een verbastering van het Portugese Bom Bahia (goede baai), werd als een te Britse naam aangevoeld. Maar haast tien jaar later spreken veruit de meeste van de meer dan zeventien miljoen stedelingen nog altijd over hun stad als ,,Bombay''.

Mumbai is een diamantstad, heeft een beroemde filmindustrie en is het kloppende industriële hart van India. Het bekoort jaarlijks massa's westerse bezoekers, zakenlui en expats . De miljoenenstad is een smeltkroes van nationaliteiten, talen en godsdiensten. In Mumbai leven hindoes, parsi, moslims, christenen, boeddhisten, sikhs en joden. Vooral in de zakendistricten is Engels met Indiase invloeden de voertaal. Op straat hoor je vooral de spreektaalvariant van Hindi, een mix van Hindi, Marathi en Indiaas Engels.

Al die kenmerken maken van Mumbai een levendige en spannende stad, zegt Amit Bhatt, een jonge Indiër die nu in Brussel aan de slag is, maar in Mumbai voor een consultantsbureau heeft gewerkt. ,,Het is veruit mijn favoriete stad in India, misschien wel in de hele wereld'', reageert Bhatt. ,,Waarom? Mumbai is levendig, heeft een good vibe , en er is altijd een boel te beleven. Het is een stad die nooit gaat slapen.''

Toen bomaanslagen dinsdagavond aan zeker tweehonderd mensen het leven kostten, was de chaos compleet, vertelt Sumit Kamalia, aan de telefoon vanuit Mumbai. Maar gisteren leek het op straat alweer alsof er niets gebeurd was. ,,Ik was op mijn werk, toen het gebeurde'', zegt Kamalia, die in de diamantsector van Mumbai werkt. ,,Ik woon op veertig kilometer van mijn kantoor. Normaal duurt het met de auto vijftig minuten voor ik thuis ben. Dinsdagavond deed ik er vijf uur over.'' De Indiase diamantsector haalt elk jaar miljarden euro's aan export binnen. De diamanten worden in hoofdzaak in Mumbai en in Surat, zo'n 250 kilometer verder naar het noorden, geslepen.

Het telefoonverkeer in Mumbai, dat dinsdagavond en -nacht helemaal was uitgeschakeld, was gisteren in grote mate weer hersteld. Het viel ook op dat alle winkels, scholen en kantoren open waren, zegt Kamalia, al hebben de bommen wel de diamantsector schade toegebracht. ,,De diamantmarkt was woensdag niet open. En we weten inmiddels dat zeker zestig diamantwerkers op de getroffen pendelaarstreinen zaten.'' Wordt er op straat in Mumbai over de plegers van de aanslag gespeculeerd? ,,Toch niet in mijn vriendenkring'', zegt Sumit Kamalia lachend. ,,Dat laten we aan de politici over.''

Prafulla Chaudhari werkt in Mumbai voor een farmaceutisch bedrijf. ,,Vlak na de aanslagen was iedereen hier natuurlijk doodsbenauwd, maar dat veranderde heel vlug. Vijf, zes uur na de bommen reden de treinen alweer. De volgende ochtend ging iedereen naar zijn werk. Dat is dan ook onze boodschap aan de daders: Mumbai is niet bang. Wat jullie ook uithalen, op onze stad heeft het nauwelijks een impact.''

De assistent-filmregisseur Nikhil Deshpande was op het moment van de aanslagen aan het filmen: ,,En daar ben ik ook vandaag mee verder gegaan'', reageert Deshpande, aan de telefoon vanop de sets van Bollywood, gemeten aan het aantal films de grootste filmindustrie ter wereld. Bollywoodfilms zijn vooral gekend wegens hun doorwrochte plots, uitbundige muziek en preutse liefdesscènes - een kusje op de mond kan nog net.

Deshpande viel vooral op hoe Mumbai dinsdagnacht eerst op zichzelf terug plooide en dan de handen uit de mouwen stak: ,,Iedereen trok de straat op, om elkaar te helpen. Dat moest ook wel, want de officiële hulp liet wel een uur op zich wachten.'' Zijn stad heeft de laatste tijd heel wat moeten verduren, zegt de filmwerker: ,,Eerst kregen we al de moessonregens over ons. Dat bracht hier in Mumbai al een golf van solidariteit op gang. Daarna veroorzaakte ( de rechts-nationalistische hindoe-partij, red. ) Shiv Sena wat oproer in de stad. En dan gebeurde veruit het meest vreselijke: we werden door de bommen geraakt.''

Maar de solidariteit onder de inwoners is sinds de moesson alleen toegenomen, voegt Deshpande eraan toe: ,,En dat stelt mij gerust. Wat er ook gebeurt, Mumbai is er blijkbaar klaar voor en pikt de draad vrijwel meteen weer op.''
