Ele kwam vorige maand op bezoek uit Italie en nam een hele reeks foto's onder meer van onze kleine meisjes. Intussen zijn ze uiteraard alweer een tikkeltje groter geworden. Malini staat mooi rechts met de steun van een hand en Mira voelt zich helemaal klaar om in januari naar de grote school te gaan. Vandaag gaan we met z'n allen een Kerstboom kopen, joepie.

3 weeks in India

Mira and her cousin Tanya in Pune.

She was really excited to see a baby sturdier than Malini that she could hold and squeeze. Mira's Hindi has improved a lot, but she still addresses me in Dutch. Malini has been an awesome baby, sleeping well, almost never sick and enjoying daily Indian baby massages. Tomorrow our holiday in India will come to an end. We are flying back to Belgium Sunday night with our two girls. They spent time in the cool hills around Pune, traveled by train to Goa and experienced the monsoon (Goa is still beautiful but there are less hippies) and the last week we have been in Delhi, where it is really hot. Makes me realize I have always been visiting India in winter.

Mira & Malini

Enkele kiekjes van de twee zusjes en ook van Mira in de speeltuin, even heerlijk alleen met de grootouders.

Mira is een flinke grote zus, buiten het doorsnee temperament van een meisje van twee toont ze bijna geen jaloezie. Al wil ze wel graag langer opblijven en door de ouders in slaap worden gewiegd. Maar Mira is zo blij als ze haar zusje ziet en wil altijd Malini kijke, liefst van heel dichtbij.

Malini is an Indian name and probably not familiar to most non-Indians...

vlaggetjes

Dank aan Erik voor het ontwerp van de vlaggetjes. Ze zijn gedrukt in de Wrikker in Berchem op milieuvriendelijke persen. We kregen veel leuke reacties op de vlaggetjes. De foto van ons allemaal in het houten bad is genomen in Letland de voorbije Kerstvakantie. Met z'n allen buiten in warm water terwijl het koud en winterig was, een leuk baarmoedergevoel.

Mảləni

Malini komt vele grammetjes bij, drinkt goed en glimlacht in haar slaap. Grote zus Mira is heel blij en slechts een klein tikje jaloers. Ze merkte al een paar keer op dat de baby heeeel moe is.

De Indische naam Malini spreek je best uit met de klemtoon op de eerste lettergreep. Fonetisch wordt dat dan ongeveer /Mảləni/ als ik me het fonetische schrift juist herinner. Je kan ook de derde lettergreep beklemtonen als je een beetje kwaad bent, maar dat ik me nu nog helemaal niet voorstellen.

Welkom Malini welcome

Malini werd net voor middernacht geboren op 4 /4 /8. Er was geen tijd voor foto's tot na de bevalling, want na een lange aanloop (15 dagen na datum) kwam ze heel snel ter wereld. Een unieke ervaring! Iedereen stelt het goed.

Hallo baby 04-04-2008

Joke's dochter Wadia (schrijf ik dat juist) en de mijne tijdens een brunch vorige maand. Kwestie van wat te oefenen met twee kindjes op de schoot. Mira voelt wel aan dat er iets te veranderen staat, ben benieuwd hoe ze het allemaal gaat opnemen. Momenteel is ze wat ziek, wat haar niet weerhield om vandaag vrolijk bij Moeke en Vake Paaseitjes te gaan rapen. Parul is naar haar koor, kwestie van iedereen daar nog eens te zien voor de bevalling, die voor haar nu wel mag gaan komen...

In een klein stationnetje

Mijn hand groeit mee met nummertje twee.
De vroedvrouw denkt dat het voor begin april wordt.

Hier is Mira's laatste nieuwe lievelingsliedje, ze zingt vooral de twee laatste zinnen.

Somehow being in a new creche and running around without a diaper at home made Mira realise that she can control her bowels and run to the potty for a pee or a poo. A trivial fact perhaps, however a great mental step forward and really handy for the parents :)

climate is out of joint?

It is only February and last week we went from the warmest day ever in Feb (19 degrees imagine) to bone chilling cold and foggy weather. It feels wrong, but what can we do?

Saying sorry the (proper) Australian way

The Australian government has made a formal apology for the past wrongs caused by successive governments on the indigenous Aboriginal population. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologised in parliament to all Aborigines for laws and policies that "inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss". He singled out the "Stolen Generations" of thousands of children forcibly removed from their families. The apology, beamed live around the country on TV, was met with cheers.

Here is the complete text of his speech, very long, but definitely worth a read. There's now talk of this being merely symbolic and doubts whether any compensation would follow. BUT, its something, possibly a beginning...

New Year in Riga, Latvia 07-08

10 days of nice Latvian winter

On my 30th birthday, my wife gave me two and a half tickets to go to Latvia. 12 years ago I spent a year in Riga with crazy exchange students, proud Latvians and the soviet past. I went back the year after to visit my second hostfamily and Elina, a friend I 've stayed in touch with and who loves to come to Belgium at Easter time. It was great to go back now and discover how new shops hadn't made the place uglier, how the cream is still deliciously natural and how beautiful the art nouveau architecture is, however, life has become a lot more expensive. I turned up at my hostfamily's doorstep and they still knew me :) My hostbrother and sister both have a baby about Mira's age. Well, the rest are pictures and stories if you are interested.
